Job overview
The post holder will be a member of the patient flow team, responsible for managing emergency and elective patient flow into and out of the Trusts bed complement. The patient flow team has a combination of clinical and non-clinical staff and has 24-hour responsibility for placing the right patients in the right place at the right time, whilst maintaining patient safety and national performance standards for emergency and elective care and single sex accommodation compliance
The post holder will be required to cover weekday shifts but may be required to cover shifts over the 24 period on a rotational basis.
Main duties of the job
1. Build effective working relationships with wards and the Emergency Department to support consistent bed utilisation, patient experience and performance standards.
2. Coordinate safe, timely discharges with ward teams, matrons, medical staff and the Discharge Command Centre, including communicating sensitive and complex patient information.
3. Plan and allocate beds for emergency and elective admissions across the Trust to ensure appropriate placement within national timeframes and single-sex accommodation requirements.
4. Balance capacity and demand across divisions, prioritising admissions, transfers and escalation actions to maintain patient flow and support elective activity.
5. Maintain accurate bed and patient flow information using Trust IT systems (e.g., CPD), producing situation reports and providing timely operational updates to senior managers and teams.
6. Liaise with ED, assessment areas, wards, transport, infection prevention and critical care to resolve capacity pressures, manage outliers and contribute to delivery of ED waiting time targets.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
15. Registered Nurse (Level 1)
16. Recognised teaching/assessing qualification
17. Evidence of continued professional development and implementation in clinical practice within the last 12 months
Experience and Knowledge
Essential criteria
18. At least 18 months at Band 5 or equivalent
19. Sound knowledge of IT processes and patient administration
20. Knowledge of HR policies and procedures relevant to managing people
21. Clinical audit and standard setting
22. Knowledge of relevant organisational policies and procedures
Desirable criteria
23. Previous experience in a Patient Flow Team
