Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Bed Manager to join our Team on a Permanent Basis

The bed manager role is a key role in the provision of safe patient flow across the Trust, ensuring patients receive the care they require in the most appropriate place.

The bed manager will be part of the Operational site management team working 24/7 providing clinical expertise, managerial, leadership and coordination for the Trust across the Whiston, St Helens and Newton site.


Main duties of the job

* The Operational Management Team is a key function in the provision of 5-star patient care across the Trust.
* The bed manager role is an important member of this team ensuring the effective utilisation of inpatient and day-case beds on a 24/7 basis whilst maintaining clinical quality and safety.
* They will assist in the coordination of elective and non-elective admissions across the 24-hour period, along with maintaining the various patient flow internal and external systems for monitoring and escalation.
* The postholder will provide nursing support, operational and clinical advice to all areas within the Trust.
* To develop the necessary skills and experience in patient flow and provide leadership.
* Act as deputy for the Operational Site Manager.
* To work according to NMC code of professional conduct and professional guidelines.

Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KEY DUTIES

* To ensure the coordination of admissions, transfers, and discharges for all patients across the acute Site are undertaken recognising the clinical requirements of all individuals.
* To ensure prioritisation of emergency admissions via the Emergency Department to maintain the national standards and in line with national targets.
* To work with the band 7 Operational Site Managers supporting 24/7 clinical site management and deputise in their absence.
* To act as a clinical expert for nursing issues.
* Take appropriate action to address any issues or risk.
* To provide clear focus for clinical leadership and to provide clinical and professional advice and guidance to staff as required.
* To promote and facilitate the implementation of the Trust Core Values and objectives.
* To ensure data collection to support accurate reporting, for audit trails thereby ensuring effective utilisation of resources and relevant data quality standards in line with service and Organisational standards.
* To ensure early escalation of any issues that would impede flow, affect quality, patient safety or cause increased length of stay/ delay of safe discharge and to support the response to issues as required.
* To provide accurate and timely information relating to patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, maintaining awareness of overall ‘escalation profile’ of the Trust.
* Be responsible for ensuring good utilisation of Discharge lounge on a daily basis.
* Act as a point of contact for barriers to effective patient flow i.e. gender/ bed availability incompatibility, IPCC issues.
* To communicate with wards to share information regarding bed availability and patient flow.
* All other duties that are considered appropriate to the post.

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

* Maintain Professional registration.
* Adhere to the NMC Code of Practice and the Scope of Professional Practice.
* To attend relevant meetings.
* To act as a positive role model to all grades of staff within the Trust.
* Maintain effective communication with patients, relatives, visitors and staff as required.
* To work autonomously and manage own workload on a daily basis.
* To communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
* To keep abreast with professional developments.
* Keep up to date with all relevant changes in policies and procedures and present a strong corporate image.
* To ensure the confidentiality of all patient information in line with Data Protection / Caldecott legislation.
* To ensure the privacy and dignity of all patients is paramount and not compromised.
* Be fully conversant with the Major Incident Policy and be prepared to support its activation as required per policy.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

* Ensure all relevant records are kept up to date and accurate and recording is completed in line with Trust policies and with the NMC Record Keeping guidance.
* Maintain statistical data for the role.

TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES

* Develop own skills and knowledge and contribute to the development of others.
* Support the preceptorship training programme relating to patient flow processes.
* To act as a role model and expert practitioner, providing support and guidance to nursing staff.
* To participate in an annual performance review to identify the post-holder’s personal development needs
* To attend Trust Statutory and Mandatory training sessions as required and any other training courses relevant to the post.
* To personally ensure fulfilment of the requirements for professional updating and to maintain a personal record for future registration purposes.

LINE MANAGEMENT/ SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

* Responsibility for designated staff within the team including appraisals, HR management etc.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

* Recognising the need for appropriate management of skill mix and utilisation of bank and agency staff when allocating shifts and within own team.

RESEARCH & AUDIT

* Contribute to the undertaking of audits required both internally and to support external processes relating to patient flow and national targets and standards.


Person specification


Qualifications

* RGN Level 1 with current NMC Registration
* Evidence of on-going professional development
* Willingness to study to degree level
* RNC Clinical Leadership


Knowledge and Experience

* Substantial post registration experience in an acute care setting
* Knowledge of clinical skills required to undertake the role
* Knowledge of safeguarding procedures/protocols within the Trust
* Awareness, understanding and application of research and development current evidence-based practices
* Knowledge of National Framework of NHS Continuing Healthcare and its application
* Knowledge and understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005/DOLS legislation and its application
* Knowledge of community health and social care networks
* Awareness, understanding and application of current evidence-based practices
* Demonstrate commitment to the clinic governance agenda
* Awareness of how audit may influence quality of patient care
* Experience of managing clinical flows
* Knowledge of commissioning services
