The GB energy system is rapidly transforming as we target Clean Power by 2030 and NetZero by 2050. The distribution network is vital in this transformation as we look to accommodate thousands of electric vehicles and heat pumps in people’s homes and connect large volumes of solar and wind. This will require us building out our network at a rate we have not seen this century. And, as one of the Distribution Network Operators, we have a key role to play in the Great Grid Upgrade – it’s an essential part in enabling the accelerated strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) projects across England and Wales. An exciting opportunity is available for a Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) Manager within the newly formed ASTI Projects team in Field Operations to work at the heart of delivering our major infrastructure projects, ideally based within the East Midlands area. Reporting to a Head of Delivery you’ll ensure that the ASTI Project portfolio operates to the highest standards of Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality throughout the project lifecycle. Driving a strong effective SHE culture and setting the strategy through to completion of the project. Ensuring that there is a robust assurance process in place to monitor and audit the standards by which the portfolio operates. As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office, site and home working as needed. Main Responsibilities Support the safe delivery of NGED’s ASTI team’s delivery projects to cost, time and quality. Shape and implement the project specific SHE strategy and plan. Promoting proactive reporting and a positive culture, focusing on the wellbeing, health and safety of employees and contractors. Manage team of multi-disciplined SHEQ advisors safety who provide support and technical expertise to the project. Ensuring the project has a robust monitoring and assurance process in place for contractor performance against key SHEQ deliverables. Proactively collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders at all levels to enhance ways of working across the area of responsibility and the wider business. Working with senior leaders to ensure forthcoming activities are adequately planned and prepared for, and to mitigate any associated risk. Interface with the contractor(s) for all day-to-day construction activities, and monitor portfolio progress, collaboratively resolving programme risk escalations on behalf of the Project Director. Provide up to date monthly reports to the relevant forum’s or project board. Support regular site construction meetings with Contractors and ensure the facilitation of regular site safety walks to ensure that activities are being managed as per the agreed Construction Phase Plan. Review and implement improvement initiatives resultant of sensible monitoring of site construction activities and manage the close out of issues raised through SHEQ audit & inspection activities and implementation across the Project(s). Ensure consistent approach and application working across the portfolio, in coordinating test and inspection activities. Ensure project compliance of all site documents to ensure compliance with legislation, ensuring they have been subject to formal document control and uploaded to the relevant project document control system(s) in accordance with applicable procedures. Implement continuous improvement and capture lessons learned, ensuring SHEQ Best Practice is both promoted and utilised across the portfolio and sharing across Field Operations and NGED. Support delivery of trainee programmes, training courses and authorisation processes as required. Participate in incident investigations and represent the department on incident investigation panels as required The Ideal Candidate We are seeking a candidate with a comprehensive understanding of safety and environmental legislation, as well as policies and practices related to construction and contractual obligations concerning Client and Principal Contractor duties. The ideal candidate will thrive in a commercial environment, effectively managing deadlines and demonstrating awareness of contract management within fixed-price and target-cost contracts. We’re also looking for: A relevant safety qualification, such as the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management, or a chartered membership of IOSH or progress towards it. A degree in safety, environmental, or engineering disciplines is preferred, along with an IEMA certificate. Proven leadership experience, with the ability to inspire and lead through others. In-depth knowledge of quality management and NEBOSH inspection requirements, along with the application of inspection and test plans to ensure compliant project delivery. Experience in the safe management of construction works, including the prevention and investigation of incidents. Ideally, you will have a track record of developing and sustaining safe working cultures and advising operational managers on safety legislation and policies. Once in the role, you will have the aptitude to gain a thorough understanding of current National Grid policies, procedures, and specifications related to SHE, materials, and construction processes. You will embody the company values and proactively demonstrate and develop your leadership skills. This role is subject to a satisfactory Barring Service, (DBS) check, depending on the role different levels of screening and vetting are required. Some roles require a triannual check.
