Offer description

About the Role

Balfour Beatty is a leading international infrastructure group, delivering some of the UK’s most complex and high-profile major projects across transport, energy and the built environment. Our Major Projects Work Winning team plays a critical role in securing these opportunities by producing compelling, high-quality bid and client materials that reflect our capability, credibility and collaborative approach.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Finance Automations Developer to join our Automations team on a permanent basis. In this role you will be responsible for creating automation tools, primarily to be used within the Finance Operations department, as well as maintaining and providing support for such automation tools across the Finance function, ensuring automations produced are professional, stable, and well-supported.

What You’ll Be Doing

* Use digital technology to automate office tasks within the Finance function. This is accomplished with the full suite of existent and emerging digital technologies, e.g. cloud computing, machine learning, digital robots and AI/copilot-enabled programming.
* Work with the Finance Transformation team, and the Finance Automations Product Manager, to ensure that automations are built to a common standard and that relevant documentation is filled out to a professional standard.
* Collaborate with end users to ensure that automations created for usage by other teams present a good user experience, including meaningful error messages and a comprehensible user guide.
* Where the responsibility for automated tasks needs to rest within the Automations team, ensure that timelines are clearly laid out and understood.

Automation Maintenance

* Support the business by providing support for existing automations built by the Automations team, including bug fixing, troubleshooting, configuration and re‑training.
* Work with the Finance Automations Product Manager to carry out periodic reviews of previously created automations, updating and/or archiving tools appropriately when they are no longer fit for purpose.

Centralised Process Automations (Including Robotic and AI‑Agentic Automations)

* Where automations are complex and/or time‑sensitive enough that they must be operated by the Automations team, ensure the timely and consistent delivery of such.
* Continue to drive “true” automation by converting manually triggered automation tools into robotic‑automated processes and/or data pipelines.
* Work with the IT Data Department to convert existing automations for data transfer into proper data pipelines, making data tables available through the Data Lake.
* Create and maintain live reports for key metrics using Power BI, to replace Excel‑based reports currently being produced both within the team and by managers across Finance.

Who We’re Looking For

Process Automation

* Experience in office process analysis
* Expertise with MS Office automation tools (e.g., VBA and/or Power Automate)
* Experience with Robotic, Agentic and AI‑powered process automation (e.g., Power Automate)
* Experience with planning and orchestration of Robotic and/or Agentic process flows, including workflow optimisation
* Understanding and vision of best practices within digital technology teams
* Understanding of the opportunities presented by evolving technologies

Data Automation

* Experience with financial data sets
* Expertise in data extraction and transformation (e.g., SQL and/or Power Query)
* Experience in presenting data analysis and creating reports
* Experience in Power BI report creation and maintenance
* Experience in ML‑based data analysis and decision‑making
* Understanding of the importance of data modelling for modern digital solutions, especially machine learning analysis

Working Methods

* Ability to collaborate in a project‑based team
* Understanding of a Lean continuous improvement project mindset
* Strong organisational skills and ability to communicate with both technical and managerial stakeholders.
* Knowledge of emerging technologies in the automation area, and skills needed to stay abreast of continuing developments (e.g., RPA, Agentic Orchestration)

Benefits

* Smart working, giving you more flexibility such as staggered start and finish times, with up to 40% remote working, where roles allow.
* 25 days paid annual leave (pro rata)
* Family friendly policies which include 28 weeks full pay for maternity/adoption leave and four weeks full pay for paternity/partners leave
* Pension, share incentive plan, volunteering leave, recognition schemes and much more…
