We are looking for a Climate Assistant who has passion and experience supporting people and places to prepare for our changing climate.The Climate Assistant role is at the heart of a vibrant team which is a leader in climate action in NI. The role is varied and challenging, dealing with emerging climate change concepts, while supporting delivery of a multi-layered work programme and a range of other climate projects. It requires a driven, curious, and collaborative approach.In this role you will have the opportunity to develop personal skills such as team working, and event organisation as well as climate change specific skills such as adaptation and mitigation toolkit development.You will also gain valuable experience working in Climate NI when Northern Ireland is seeking the best way forward to meet the challenges of climate change under the recent Climate Change Act (NI) 2022.
Responsibilities
* Work with Climate NI staff and Climate NI Network to fulfil the Climate NI Work Programme and other NIEL climate projects as needed.
* Lead on communicating complex climate issues and opportunities across Climate NI’s online platforms and with Climate NI network as required, to raise awareness and enable action.
* Support development and promotion of training, resources, case studies and sector specific information E.g. Climate Change Training and Climate Action Planning Toolkits.
* Secretariat duties and event organisation for Climate NI Network and other NIEL climate projects as needed.
* Identify and engage new stakeholders and develop existing networks and partnerships at a regional and national level.
* Support research and synthesis on climate adaptation and mitigation, e.g. policy briefings, methodologies for progress assessment, and contributing to joint publications.
* Support the monitoring, evaluation and reporting of Climate NI Team actions and outputs.
* Contribute to engagement with non-government stakeholders on policy development e.g. Climate Change Act (NI) 2022.
* Deputise for other Climate NI Team staff when needed, including representing Climate NI and NIEL at events.
Skills and Qualifications
* A relevant third level qualification.
* At least one year of experience in a professional or volunteering position related to climate change or the environment.
* Experience, knowledge and understanding of climate change issues and the Northern Ireland context.
* Experience of analysing and communicating (both written and verbal) complex issues to a range of audiences e.g. written reports, case studies, toolkits.
* Experience of delivering and monitoring online communications.
* Experience of organising online and in-person events and activities.
* Ability to plan and manage workload to meet agreed targets and deadlines in a professional environment.
* Working knowledge of IT systems including Microsoft Office packages.
* Additional relevant qualifications (e.g. MSc, PhD or other).
* Experience of developing and delivering teaching/training programmes (e.g. Carbon Literacy Training).
* Experience of developing online and/or organisational communication strategies.
* Experience of influencing or developing environmental and climate policy.
* Experience of facilitating secretariat, servicing meetings and delivering on an agreed work programme.
* Good interpersonal skills and ability to work well within a team.
* Experience of working with and understanding the ethos of a range of stakeholders in the academic, voluntary, public and/or private sectors.
