About the Pathogen Project
The Pathogen Project exemplifies EIT’s dedication to ground‑breaking science. It seeks to transform pathogen risk management, detection, and response by leveraging whole‑genome sequencing (WGS)‑based metagenomic and pathogen‑specific analytical tools. The goal is to power metagenomic devices using long‑read sequencing technologies by building a comprehensive database of pathogen information to inform response. Enabled by Oracle Inc.’s cloud‑computing scale and security, the project is advancing toward certified diagnostic tools for deployment in laboratories, hospitals, and public health organisations worldwide.
Your Role
We are seeking an experienced and detail‑oriented Data Architect to shape the future of our data platform and collaborate with product and engineering teams to deliver analytical and AI products that transform pathogen monitoring and diagnostics. You will define data standards, data models, and best practices to ensure the integrity, security, and accessibility of our data assets, optimise data processes and workflows, and foster a data‑driven culture throughout the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
* Understand and manage data requirements by working with stakeholders to analyse and identify architecturally significant needs.
* Formulate data models and standards to support interoperability and federation for pathogen monitoring and research.
* Communicate the data architecture to various stakeholder groups within EIT.
* Develop data architectures, including data flows, data lifecycle, data security, durability, and documentation standards.
* Support developers, mentoring them to realise the data architecture.
* Create architecture artifacts and present them through governance processes.
* Verify implementations to ensure systems are consistent with the agreed architecture and meet requirements.
* Define architecture data standards to ensure compliance, including Medical Device Accreditation where relevant.
* Provide squads with standard patterns, guidance, and technical standards.
* Document and assure solutions through defined governance processes.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience
* Architecting and delivering modern data platform standards, tools, and patterns, including data lakes, lakehouses, Iceberg, and data mesh.
* Experience building and delivering large‑scale data platforms.
* Familiarity with TOGAF and other enterprise architecture frameworks.
* Knowledge of data governance, data quality, and data cataloguing.
* Master, metadata, and reference data management.
* Understanding of Agile practices and sprint‑based methodology.
* Active contribution to knowledge sharing.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience
* Knowledge of genomics.
* Experience with cloud‑based data platforms, preferably Oracle OCI, AWS, or Azure services.
* Understanding of federation standards for genomics (GA4GH).
* Understanding of data standards for pathogen data interoperability (PHA4GE).
* Experience architecting data standards for research environments.
* Experience with healthcare clinical data and related standards such as OMOP and SNOMED.
Key Attributes
* Collaboration.
* Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment.
* Willingness to learn and upskill in new technology.
* Hands‑on enthusiasm for exploring new technology or developing POCs.
Benefits
* Competitive Salary + Travel Allowance + Bonus.
* Enhanced holiday pay.
* Pension.
* Life Assurance.
* Income Protection.
* Private Medical Insurance.
* Hospital Cash Plan.
* Therapy Services.
* Perk Box.
* Electrical Car Scheme.
Working Together
* You must have the right to work permanently in the UK with a willingness to travel as necessary; sponsorship will be considered on a case‑by‑case basis.
* You will live in, or be within easy commuting distance of, Oxford (or be willing to relocate).
* Hybrid working arrangement.
