The Cube is our dedicated support hub for learners with neurodiversity and related mental health challenges, offering a calm, nurturing environment where students develop skills, resilience and independence. As part of this team you will enable, support and develop young people so they can access education and fulfil their potential.

Salary: £19,271.24 – £20,187.70 per annum, pro rata for part‑year start.


Protection of Children and Young Persons (Children’s Act 1989)

Any offers of appointment will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check, as well as receipt of satisfactory references and Occupational Health clearance. An enhanced DBS check is required for this position. By applying, you agree to an Enhanced DBS check in line with DBS regulations.


Background to the post

WCG is recognised for inclusive provision at all levels for young people whose learning is affected by autism, additional learning differences and mental health. The Specialist Learning Mentor will work with students with Autism Spectrum Conditions, ADHD and high anxiety levels to achieve independence and their potential. The role involves 1:1 mentoring in classroom and outside taught sessions, and administrative tasks relating to student progress, retention and achievement. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team and work to create a trauma‑informed, attachment‑aware environment.


Duties and Responsibilities

* Provide 1:1 support in‑class, during breaks and lunchtimes, or mentoring outside the classroom as directed.
* Assist the class lecturer with preparation and adaptation of materials for named students.
* Promote and support independent learning, particularly through technology.
* Act as key worker for designated students to help reach EHCP outcomes.
* Support the Curriculum Lead in the EHCP Annual Review Process.
* Monitor and review individual student targets with the Curriculum Lead.
* Contact parents by telephone or in writing, with Curriculum Lead’s permission.
* Act as trouble‑shooter to ensure students meet deadlines and catch up.
* Attend Academy and Inclusion Team meetings.
* Undertake training and development, including Team Teach.
* Train and act as invigilator or Human Support (Reader, Scribe, Prompt) in exams.
* Accompany and support students during work experience placements, trips if appropriate.
* Perform administrative duties: keep records, complete ProMonitor records, update tutors, complete support reviews.
* Collaborate with College staff to produce Individual Risk Assessment, Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans, Medical Protocols and exam access arrangements.
* Attend college‑delivered ‘Teaching Essentials’ training.


Offers of work

For the successful candidate a conditional offer of work will be made. The offer will be conditional upon mandatory pre‑employment checks including DBS, Barred List check, right to work check, internet search and TRA check for academic posts.


Essential Attainments

* Prove English and Maths skills equivalent to Level 2.
* Hold a qualification relevant to Specific Learning Difficulties at Level 2 or above.
* Have working knowledge of information technology including e‑mail, internet and software applications, including assistive technologies.
* Have previous experience supporting young people with Autism Spectrum Condition, anxiety, emotion‑based school avoidance and mental health needs.
* Show experience of liaison, advocacy and collaborative working.
* Show experience in working with learners on a 1‑2‑1 basis.
* Have experience coaching and motivating learners of different ages and abilities.
* Be knowledgeable of Educational Health and Care Plans and the SEND Code of Practice (2014).
