Overview
Working within the Marine & Tunnel (M&T) team and reporting to the Surface Project Manager, the candidate will take a leading role in delivering preliminary surface civil works ahead of tunnelling operations. This includes site set‑up of compounds, segment yards and auxiliary areas, as well as managing earthworks and the construction of TBM launch shafts.
The role involves close collaboration with engineering, planning and commercial teams during the transition from pre‑delivery into full construction, contributing to procurement strategy, risk management and programme control. The position requires regular travel to the London office in early stages before full transition to Suffolk.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the execution of surface civil works, ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality and performance.
* Manage excavation and construction of TBM launch shafts and associated assets.
* Oversee subcontractors and coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
* Monitor programme, budgets and risk, implementing corrective actions where required.
* Drive compliance with UK HSE legislation and quality systems.
* Support stakeholder engagement with regulators, local authorities and client teams.
* Assist the Surface Project Manager, including deputising when required.
Essential Qualifications
* Demonstrable experience in construction site set‑up, including civil and earthworks.
* Strong technical knowledge of civil engineering methods, excavation, concrete and TBM shaft construction.
* Proven team management experience, able to lead, motivate and coordinate multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors.
* Sound understanding of project budgeting, cost control, planning and programme management.
* Strong organisational and communication skills, with experience in stakeholder management.
* Comprehensive knowledge of UK HSE legislation, site safety and quality systems.
* Ability to work collaboratively and proactively within a multidisciplinary alliance structure.
Desirable
* Proven track record in delivery of large-scale civil works projects, ideally including major infrastructure, heavy earthworks or tunnelling enabling works.
* Relevant qualifications such as a master’s in construction management or project management; SMSTS or equivalent certifications.
