Data Architect
Location: Edinburgh or Manchester (Hybrid)
Role Overview
An organisation undergoing a significant transformation of its data and technology landscape is seeking an experienced Data Architect to support a large‑scale, multi‑year modernisation programme.
The role sits within a central Group Architecture function and focuses on reshaping enterprise data architecture as core platforms and services are brought back under internal control. You will work across complex legacy estates and modern cloud technologies, ensuring data remains secure, compliant, and fit for purpose throughout the transition.
You’ll collaborate closely with data engineering, analytics, governance, risk teams, and senior business stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
1. Define and own enterprise data architecture aligned to long‑term strategy
2. Rationalise and modernise complex legacy and third‑party data estates
3. Design end‑to‑end Azure data architecture supporting:
4. Live operational systems
5. Customer servicing
6. Regulatory and statutory reporting
7. Analytics and MI
8. Develop and govern conceptual, logical, and physical data models
9. Establish architecture standards and guardrails to prevent fragmentation
10. Provide technical leadership across Python, SQL, and Azure data services
11. Ensure compliance with security, governance, and data privacy requirements
12. Support senior stakeholders in balancing delivery speed, cost, risk, and long‑term sustainability
Required Experience
13. Proven background as a Data Architect
14. Strong hands‑on Experience with:
15. Python (data engineering and transformation)
16. Advanced SQL (modelling and optimisation)
17. Azure data platforms including:
18. Azure Data Lake
19. Azure Data Factory
20. Databricks
21. Synapse
22. Azure SQL
23. Experience modernising legacy or third‑party data estates
24. Strong understanding of data modelling, integration, distributed systems, and cloud architecture
25. Ability to communicate complex architectural decisions clearly to technical and non‑technical stakeholders
