We are seeking a versatile, proactive, and customer‑focused Stores & General Labour Operative to support day‑to‑day operations across a Defence environment. The role includes a combination of stores responsibilities, general labouring tasks, and customer support, ensuring the effective delivery of logistics services to military personnel and contractors. The successful candidate will be reliable, adaptable, and able to work both independently and as part of a team while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and service delivery.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
The role involves carrying out physical tasks safely and efficiently, including relocating furniture, equipment, and stores, as well as assisting with waste management activities such as collection and disposal. Responsibilities include escorting visitors or contractors on-site when required and supporting authorised events and activities across the site. The position also requires assisting with loading and unloading freight, escorting and delivering goods as directed, and constructing temporary structures or performing similar labouring tasks when needed. Daily duties include accounting, issuing, and receipting equipment in accordance with policy, along with receiving, checking, and processing deliveries while reporting any discrepancies. The role involves replenishing stock, maintaining stock levels, completing stocktakes for compliance, and analysing stock holdings against future demand to recommend upscaling or descaling where appropriate. Additional responsibilities include managing customer queries, handling inbound and outbound shipments, liaising with internal and external contractors, maintaining registers, and overseeing weekly laundry service processes. Accurate data entry and effective use of IT applications are essential, and the role further supports change initiatives and business improvement activities as required.
What We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will be a reliable, trustworthy, and physically capable individual who can perform effectively in a fast‑paced Defence logistics environment. They should demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The role requires someone who is proactive, adaptable, and able to perform well under pressure, with a good customer‑facing manner and the ability to build productive working relationships. Basic IT literacy is essential, particularly familiarity with Microsoft Office, with Excel being desirable. Candidates should have a working knowledge of Health and Safety practices, strong organisational ability, and excellent attention to detail. The ability to multi‑task and manage changing priorities is important, as is holding a full UK driving licence.
Desirable Attributes
The desirable attributes for the role include having experience in a stores, warehouse, or logistics environment, along with knowledge of MOD Supply Chain systems or MJDI, although training can be provided for these systems if required. A forklift licence or prior forklift experience is also considered beneficial, with training available where necessary. Additionally, understanding reverse supply chain processes is regarded as a valuable asset for candidates.
Additional Requirements
The role includes several additional requirements, including meeting MOD security vetting standards and obtaining a DBS Standard check. Candidates must also provide proof of their right to work in the UK and are required to wear the issued company uniform. Additionally, the position may involve occasional local travel to support training requirements.
