You are looking for a job as a labourer? As a labourer you will be asked to carry out physical and manual tasks that involve digging trenches, laying foundations, building walls and other carpentry jobs. Daily tasks can include ordering construction tools, performing calculations before making trenches for drains and layering concrete. Labourers also have to hold a log book in which they keep track of maintaining records.
Because of the nature of the work, most of the job takes place outside so be prepared to have work days dictated by the weather forecast. This being said, you will most likely enjoy finishing work early in the afternoon after a bright start to the day.
To become a labourer you need to have a good physical condition and know how to read and write. Knowing how to deal with numbers and measurements is compulsory. You will be part of a team so good interpersonal and communication skills are essential. You don't need to have a specific diploma, but you may follow apprenticeships that will help you learn on the job. Try to get as much experience as you can, as it will become a real asset when you start looking for your first job.
Salaries start at around £6 an hour. Labourers are often paid for the work that is available on the day so your salary will depend on the weather and projects.
