Job Title: Slinger / Signaller Location: Birmingham, UK Project: Major Infrastructure Project Reports To: Crane Supervisor / Appointed Person Rate: Days - First 40 - £20.00 per hour // Over 40 - £25.00 per hour // £60.00 per day accommodation allowance Nights - First 40 - £27.15 per hour // Over 40 - £33.94 per hour // £60.00 per day accommodation allowance Job Purpose The Slinger / Signaller is responsible for the safe slinging, directing, and movement of loads during lifting operations on a major infrastructure project. This role ensures loads are securely attached, safely guided, and communicated effectively to crane operators in line with approved lifting plans. Key Responsibilities Attach and detach loads to/from cranes and lifting equipment using the correct lifting accessories. Ensure all lifting accessories (chains, slings, shackles, lifting beams, etc.) are suitable, certified, and in good condition prior to use. Direct crane operators using approved hand signals and/or radio communication in accordance with industry standards. Maintain clear communication with the crane operator and lifting team at all times. Ensure loads are balanced, stable, and secure before lifting. Follow approved lifting plans, method statements, and risk assessments at all times. Establish and maintain exclusion zones around lifting operations. Assist in positioning loads accurately and safely. Identify and report defects, hazards, or unsafe practices immediately. Support the Crane Supervisor and Appointed Person in safe execution of lifting operations. Participate in daily briefings, toolbox talks, and safety meetings. Health, Safety & Compliance Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation including LOLER, PUWER, and BS 7121. Adhere strictly to site safety rules and lifting procedures. Stop any unsafe lifting activity and report concerns to supervision immediately. Ensure personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn and maintained at all times. Skills & Experience Required Proven experience as a Slinger / Signaller on construction or infrastructure projects. Strong understanding of lifting operations and safe slinging techniques. Ability to interpret lifting plans and follow instructions accurately. Good communication skills, particularly when working in high-risk environments. Awareness of different types of lifting equipment and accessories. Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced site environment. Qualifications & Certifications CPCS A40 Slinger/Signaller (or NPORS equivalent). Valid CSCS card (if applicable). Knowledge of LOLER, PUWER, and BS 7121. Relevant site safety training (e.g., HS2 Induction or equivalent – desirable).
