Key Responsibilities

Pre-Entry Safety

Conduct atmospheric testing (O₂, H₂S, CO, LEL) using gas detectors (e.g., Crowcon/GMI).
*
Verify entry permits, risk assessments, and rescue plans.
*
Set up tripod/winch systems (LOLER-compliant) and communications.
2.
Continuous Monitoring
*
Maintain constant visual/radio contact with entrants (e.g., via hard-wired comms).
*
Track entry time limits and personnel counts.
*
Monitor gas levels and environmental changes (e.g., flooding, temperature).
3.
Emergency Response
*
Initiate non-entry rescue using retrieval equipment if entrant fails to respond.
*
Summon emergency services/rescue team (never enter alone!).
*
Administer emergency first aid (e.g., CPR, burns) post-rescue.
4.
Documentation
*
Log entry/exit times, gas readings, and equipment checks.
*
Report near-misses or hazards to the Site Controller
