We are seeking Autism Learning Mentors to work within one of our partner SEND schools in (Ashington) Northumberland. This exceptional setting offers a therapeutic curriculum and holistic approach to learning, incorporating elements such as Forest School, sensory-based learning, and creative interventions. The school benefits from amazing facilities, on-site therapists, and outstanding support from Senior Leadership.
Importantly, the school regularly offers permanent employment to supply staff following a successful 12-week period, making this an excellent opportunity for those seeking long-term or permanent roles. Supply staff are also actively encouraged to professionally develop, with opportunities to attend evening training sessions alongside permanent team members, ensuring you are treated as an equal and fully included as part of the wider school community.
This rewarding role focuses on supporting children with Autism and additional SEND needs, helping them regulate emotions, build confidence, and fully engage in their learning journey.
You’ll work closely with teachers, therapists, and pastoral teams to create a nurturing, structured environment where every child feels understood, valued, and empowered to succeed.
Hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm, Monday to Friday
What You Need
1. Experience supporting children or young people, ideally with an Autism diagnosis
2. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build trusting, positive relationships
3. The ability to provide two recent references (work-based or educational)
4. A calm, compassionate, and proactive approach to supporting pupils’ wellbeing and learning
5. A genuine passion for inclusive, therapeutic education
Key Responsibilities
6. Provide tailored support to autistic pupils within the classroom and wider school environment
7. Implement personalised strategies to support emotional regulation, engagement, and learning
8. Support pupils during therapeutic, outdoor, and Forest School activities
9. Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, SLT, and on-site therapists to deliver consistent support
10. Monitor progress and adapt approaches to meet individual needs
11. Contribute to pastoral care, ensuring pupils feel safe, supported, and ready to learn
12. Communicate effectively with parents and carers, sharing progress and celebrating successes
