Overview

Learning Mentor. Location: Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Contract: Permanent, all year round. Working Hours: 35 hours per week, Mon - Fri. Please note that interviews are expected to take place on 26th & 27th November 2025.


Who we are and what we do

We support children and young people living in Bristol, South Glos and the surrounding areas, providing engaging play and youth work embedded in communities. We also provide personalised part-time and full-time alternative education environments for children and young people to overcome barriers to engagement and learning.


Job Purpose

To engage Children & young people (CYP) from a range of different communities in learning. Work with partners, managers, other colleagues and CYP to shape direct delivery across the organisation. Address both equality and access issues in education, and disengagement in the traditional classroom setting, by creating low-stress, supportive, and playful learning environments for young people who have experienced disadvantage. To reframe learning so that it is meaningful for each individual that you work with.


Responsibilities

* Creating trauma informed learning environments for students with multiples ACEs.
* Designing creative learning sessions for the students, responding to their interests and aspirations.
* Assessing a student’s level of progress within subject/skills and identifying areas for improvement such as working through problem questions that the student did not answer correctly.
* Providing mock examinations or tests to prepare students for real exams, where relevant.
* Providing support for students during their examinations, where relevant.
* Communicating with parents/guardians about trouble areas or any issues that require attention.
* Keeping up to date on the current curriculum and latest teaching trends.
* Maintaining an excellent knowledge of the subjects/skills/areas being taught.
* Any other duties that may be required from time to time.


What you will bring to this role

* Requires a university degree relevant to the subject being taught.
* Hold a full category B manual licence.
* Awareness, knowledge and understanding of:
o Equality and access issues young people may have faced in mainstream educational settings.
o Issues faced by students at risk of permanent exclusion.
o Bristol’s diverse communities.
o The effect of social and economic disadvantage on CYP.
o Issues that affect vulnerable CYP.
o Best practice in safeguarding CYP from harm.
o Other support agencies within Bristol and multi-agency processes of support for CYP.
o Best practice in promoting inclusion, diversity, and equality of opportunity.
o Adapting learning for young people with neurodivergent learning needs.
o Have a nuanced understanding of what meaningful learning can look like for different students.
* Experience of:
o Working within a similar role either paid or voluntary.
o Using a variety of information technology.
o Engaging and communicating effectively with a wide range of CYP on a 1:1 basis and in groups to secure positive outcomes.
o Working with partners, with families and within communities to secure outcomes for CYP.
o Safeguarding CYP from harm.
o Promoting equality of opportunity and challenging discrimination.
* The skills and ability to:
o Support young people to develop skills to aid self-regulation.
o Contribute to team targets and evaluate outcomes.
o Effectively deal with challenging and confrontational situations.
o Engage and communicate effectively with CYP, parents, carers, teachers, managers, and other professionals.
o Problem-solve, innovate, plan, organise, overcome barriers, and implement solutions effectively.
o Be flexible in approach to working locations, enabling travel around Bristol.
o Be culturally competent and able to challenge inequality.
o Work effectively with CYP from a diverse range of backgrounds.
o Work effectively – independently, in a team situation and on own initiative.
o Plan and schedule sessions and activities which motivate students to engage in learning.
o Supervise students and be a role model.

Reporting into / Accountability

Reporting into: Service Lead, Service Manager. Accountable for: This role has no direct reports.
