Backend Developer – UK (Remote/Hybrid)
Join a purpose-driven team that's using cutting-edge technology to tackle one of the world's biggest challenges: climate change. We're developing an intelligent logistics platform that empowers companies to reduce CO₂ emissions and optimize supply chains through real-time insights, predictive analytics, and automation.
We’re looking for a Backend Developer based in the UK to help us scale and enhance our API-driven logistics platform, built on Laravel (PHP) and running on a cloud-native architecture.
About the Role
As a Backend Developer, you’ll be a key contributor to our platform’s core services: managing shipments, integrating with third-party carriers, calculating CO₂ emissions, and powering data pipelines used by AI systems.
You’ll work closely with our frontend developers, ML engineers, and product team to build reliable, scalable, and secure APIs and services that power logistics operations and sustainability tracking.
Our backend runs on Laravel 11+, deployed in Kubernetes, using a range of modern cloud services (with GCP as our preferred platform).
What You’ll Do
* Develop robust, well-architected backend services using Laravel (PHP).
* Design and maintain APIs that power our logistics platform and integrate with external systems (SFTP, Twilio, Mapbox, etc.).
* Work with PostgreSQL, Redis, Firestore, and Cloud Storage to build efficient data flows.
* Implement queue workers, scheduled jobs, and event-based systems using Laravel's ecosystem.
* Collaborate with other teams to align backend functionality with UI/UX, machine learning workflows, and infrastructure goals.
What We’re Looking For
* Strong experience in backend development with PHP and the Laravel framework.
* Solid understanding of RESTful API design, MVC patterns, and database architecture.
* Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred) and caching mechanisms (e.g., Redis).
* Comfort working in Git-based workflows (we use Bitbucket) and CI/CD pipelines (Bitbucket Pipelines, Terraform, Docker).
* Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and containerized environments (Kubernetes is a plus).
* A pragmatic mindset with a focus on writing clean, maintainable, and testable code.
Bonus Points For
* Experience with Laravel packages such as Laravel Duster, Laravel Horizon, or Spatie tools.
* Understanding of GCP services like Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL, or Cloud Functions.
* Exposure to logistics, routing, or shipment tracking systems.
* Familiarity with tools like SonarLint, ESLint, and PHPStan for code quality.
* Working knowledge of OpenAPI/Swagger, GraphQL, pgBouncer, or OAuth/SSO integrations (e.g., Keycloak).
What We Offer
* Mission-Driven Work: Build systems that reduce emissions and contribute to a more sustainable world.
* Modern Tech Stack: Laravel, Kubernetes, GCP, Firestore, Redis, PostgreSQL, Terraform, Docker, and more.
* Flexibility: Work remotely within the UK or enjoy hybrid collaboration with in-person meetups.
* Ownership & Growth: Join early, help shape backend architecture, and grow into a lead or architecture-focused role.
* Supportive Culture: Small, agile team with strong communication, a passion for quality, and a drive to do meaningful work.
