Job overview

This is a great opportunity for nurses who would like to work within the maternity recovery and theatre setting at Queen Charlotte's Hospital.
The role entails providing care to women and babies in the maternity recovery area following surgical procedures.

The role would also include supporting with theatre activity and the potential to develop role within operating theatre as theatre scrub practitioner.

The post holder will assess care needs and develop, implement and evaluate programs of care for individual women/birthing people
They will be involved in the preparation of theatre equipment and instruments responsible for maintaining asepsis intraoperative and compliance with WHO safety procedures.

Main duties of the job

1. To provide high standards of skilled care and support in both perioperative and post-operative areas of the maternity service.
2. You will work collaboratively with all members of the theatre, maternity and multidisciplinary team to ensure a safe and effective service is provided.
3. The role involves carrying out post-operative care in the maternity recovery area involves and participating as a scrubbed or circulating member of the team within theatre.
4. You will work in conjunction with the theatre matron, lead midwife and wider multidisciplinary team to ensure that safe care is maintained within the theatre and recovery environment and be involved in measures to improve the quality of the service.
5. You will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring stock levels of theatre consumables and escalating any stock concerns to appropriate personnel.
6. The post holder will have oversight of the recovery area, ensuring it clean, tidy and stock levels are maintained.
7. As a team member you will work collaboratively with the midwives in caring for the new born baby while supporting the mother and partner in the care of the baby.
8. You must demonstrate politeness, kindness and sensitivity in dealing with women/birthing people, visitors/relatives and colleagues.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria

9. Registered nurse > 1year
10. Evidence of continuous professional development
11. Basic Life Support

Desirable criteria

12. Theatre course
13. Post anaesthetic course or experience
14. Mentorship or equivalent
15. Advanced life support

Experience

Essential criteria

16. Previous ward experience
17. Theatre or recovery experience
18. Able to demonstrate knowledge of clinical role in maternity recovery
19. Care of the deteriorating patient

Desirable criteria

20. Experience in recovery/HDU
21. Use of MEOWS
22. Familiar with PCA/epidurals for pain relief

Skills

Essential criteria

23. Awareness of theatre environment and resources
24. Venepuncture and cannulation
25. Ability to administer prescribed oral medications as per policies

Desirable criteria

26. Breastfeeding
27. Knowledge of risk management and Datix
28. Ability to work both as a team member and autonomously
29. Administer intra venous drugs
