About the Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for Developer to join the Core Development Team within the DDaT department at Staffordshire Police. The Core Development Team is responsible for building, testing and delivering in-house applications and interfaces between different systems. We work with a wide variety of technologies though SQL is central to the work we do. Prior experience of working in a development role with one or both of SQL Server or Oracle databases would be beneficial. We also utilise other technologies such as C#, Powershell, .Net, R and Python, and work in an environment where web services are prevalent, thus an understanding of XML and JSON would be advantageous. Data Warehousing is a key focus of the work we do and we also provide technical support to business teams that work with Power BI, Business Objects and other data visualisation and reporting technologies.

As a Developer you’ll be required to help gather requirements, work from specifications, carry out impact assessments and then develop, test and deliver projects of varying sizes as needed by the business. You will support the team with a variety of wider tasks in an environment where core systems are supplied by third parties but also in-house developments are valued. The wider development team provides support for our core Records Management System and develops small to medium sized applications to meet specialist use case requirements in technologies such as PowerApps and Oracle Application Express; and also part of the team is also building an automation capability that as a core developer you will contribute to with supporting tasks.

You will participate in the delivery of larger programmes of work as part of a well-established team as well as working individually on smaller requirements. Contributing to the development of the Data Warehouse will be a critical part of the role using SQL, and technologies such as Change Data Capture and SQL Server Integration Services, so any exposure to such tools like this would be advantageous. Data Quality forms a part of our workload so any experience you have of working with Data Quality tooling will also be useful.

Business and Technical Analysis skills would be advantageous. We’ll help you build these as you’ll be exposed to Requirements Gathering, Problem Solving and Benefits Realisation activities. Any prior exposure you’ve had to Project Management or IT Service Management will also be of benefit. You will likely specialise in one or two business areas and become a key point of contact for our users, whilst also supporting operational demands and “business as usual” work to deliver change.

Further details of the key tasks, responsibilities can be found within the role profile. The specialism of the role is highlighted in the Matrix attached to the role profile.

Closing date: 20/10/ Midday 12:00
