JOB TITLE: Human Resources Manager

REPORTING TO: Head of Business Support


Summary of the role

The Law Society of Northern Ireland now wishes to appoint a Human Resources Manager. This role will be responsible for developing talent and culture within the organisation to meet the strategic objectives of the Society and the needs of its members.

The Human Resources Manager will work closely with the Senior Management Team and will have the ability to influence the future direction of the Society. The post holder will be responsible for our people strategy and will lead on all aspects of people management, organisational development, and cultural and engagement initiatives. They will be skilled in providing sound HR advice, in line with best practice, to the Senior Management Team, line managers and team leaders on a range of people matters.

Their leadership style will be inclusive and compassionate, and they will inspire their organisational colleagues to move forward towards new ways of working.


People Strategy

* Generate HR solutions for the Society, working in partnership with the Senior Management Team and employees to deliver on people initiatives. This will include best practice HR Policy and procedure, governance and compliance, compensation and benefits, recruitment, talent management, succession planning and change management to support the delivery of business objectives and drive a high-performance culture.
* Lead on the development of the people strategy in support of current and future needs of the Society, and on key projects as required.
* Maintain knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, managing legal risks, and driving regulatory compliance.


Business partnering

* Provide advice and guidance to ensure that the Society is continually implementing best practice HR processes. This will include reviewing and updating HR policies and procedures and ensuring they are communicated to all stakeholders.
* Build a trusted business partner relationship with the Senior Management Team and develop and demonstrate an understanding of the business areas, priorities, and strategic direction.
* Provide advice and guidance on complex employee relations issues, supporting colleagues at all stages of the process.


Talent Development / Performance Management

* Shape and support the implementation of Talent Development activities within the Society, working with managers and employees to increase their capabilities, through the identification of training needs for business areas and/ or individual coaching needs.
* To promote and drive effective performance management throughout the organisation, ensuring there is a fair and consistent approach to managing performance across the Society.


Recruitment and Talent Acquisition

* Support effective and efficient talent acquisition through working with managers to recruit and select high calibre people, challenging the status quo and job requirements as appropriate.
* To regularly review the Society’s employment offering to ensure a cost effective and quality service, e.g. benefits package – pension, medical health, etc.


Staff Wellbeing

* To oversee the wellbeing of employees, including absence management, return to work interviews, organising employee health initiatives, carrying out risk assessment, where relevant.
* Work closely with the Office & Facilities Manager in relation to health and safety needs, and the Member Services team in relation to in-house events where needed.
* Assist with the coordination of ISO, to promote delivery of the quality standard initiative throughout the Society.
* To promote equality, diversity and inclusion within the Society and contribute to the Society’s sustainability commitment and initiatives.


Person specification


Essential Criteria:

* Relevant HR qualification, with full Chartered Membership of the CIPD
* A minimum of 5 years HR Generalist experience at HR Manager level or above, with responsibility for the full range of HR, Talent Management and Learning and Development activities
* Extensive organisation development experience within a complex organisation, with a proven track record of successfully managing change
* Strong employee relations experience with strong influencing skills
* Demonstrable experience of driving improved employee performance through performance management and employee engagement initiatives
* Strong track record in the design and development of effective management development programmes
* Demonstrable experience of working with and influencing senior management in relation to various HR initiatives


Desirable:

* Experience of being part of a team responsible for devising and delivering cultural change
* Experience of engaging constructively with trade unions


Terms of appointment


General

The successful candidate will be expected to apply themselves full time to the business of the Law Society of Northern Ireland. They will be expected to undergo such training or attend such courses as the Law Society may consider appropriate. The Law Society conditions of employment apply.

This is a full time, permanent position. There is a probationary period of 6 months.


Key benefits

Salary scale for the post is £43,828 to £48,187, dependent on experience.

The other principal ancillary benefits are:

Interviews will take place late November 2025.

The two-page cover letter, outlining how they meet the set criteria, submitted along with a cv will form part of the assessment process. It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide evidence in this form and at assessment of how well they meet the criteria.

The Society reserves the right if required to apply the above desirable criteria for shortlisting purposes, in the order in which they appear.

The Law Society may operate a reserve list for future vacancies (either at this level or lower levels) which may arise within the Society. The reserve list is maintained for 6 months.
