Role outline:
The HR Manager will support the Head of HR & Compliance in delivering a high-quality HR function across the business. This role blends operational and commercial HR delivery with strategic exposure, providing trusted advice, managing people matters, and supporting GEL’s business growth plan through effective people practices. This role will involve travel to various sites.
The head office in Enfield is potentially relocating to approx. 1 hour of current location.
It is ideal for someone looking to develop into a future HR leadership role.
Responsibilities:
Employee Relations & Case Management
- Provide high-quality advice and case management across all aspects of employee relations including disciplinary, grievance, performance, investigations, and sickness.
- Coach and support line managers in people management, ensuring legal compliance and consistent application of policies.
- Monitor and report on sickness and absence, identifying trends and supporting interventions.
- Maintain, monitor and report on absence, conducting follow ups on self-certifications and return-to-work interviews.
- Recruitment & Onboarding
- Support the talent acquisition specialist in talent attraction, selection, interviewing, when required.
- Complete and manage onboarding process, facilitating including IT set-up, systems access and coordination with relevant teams.
- Conduct exit interviews and support offboarding activities.
HR Administration & Systems
- Maintain and update the HR Information System (HRIS), ensuring data accuracy and compliance with GDPR.
- Produce regular reports and analysis on key HR metrics.
- Support the finance department by supplying timely and accurate employee data (e.g. starters, absences, paternity/maternity leave).
Learning & Development / Talent Support
- Manage the graduate and apprenticeship schemes.
- Support career development frameworks and internal engagement programmes.
Project Work & Strategic Initiatives
- Lead or contribute to HR projects, such as wellbeing, employee engagement and change programmes.
- Represent HR at recruitment and career fairs.
- Support the organisation and facilitation of employee health checks.
- Act as a visible and trusted HR presence across all sites.
Requirements:
Essential
- 5+ years’ experience in a HR role, ideally within a complex or operational environment.
- Strong knowledge of UK employment law and confident in managing ER cases.
- Experience working with HR systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coach and influence managers.
- High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Professional, discreet and committed to confidentiality.
- Organised, flexible and able to manage multiple priorities.
Desirable
- CIPD Level 5 & 7 (or working towards).
- Experience in a construction, engineering or similar industry.
- Interest or experience in HR data, analytics or system development.
- Leadership ambition with the potential to progress into a senior HR role.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of and commitment to equal opportunities.
