National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) is operating the electricity distribution systems for the Midlands, the Southwest of England and South Wales, serving more than 8 million people. This role works within the ASTI Projects team in Field Operations based in the East Midlands.
Main Responsibilities
* Support the safe delivery of NGED’s ASTI team’s delivery projects to cost, time and quality.
* Shape and implement the project specific SHE strategy and plan, promoting a proactive, positive culture and focusing on the wellbeing, health and safety of employees and contractors.
* Manage a team of multi‑disciplined SHEQ advisors to provide safety, health, environmental and quality expertise on the project.
* Ensure robust monitoring and assurance processes for contractor performance against key SHEQ deliverables.
* Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to enhance ways of working across the portfolio and the wider business.
* Interface with contractors for day‑to‑day construction activities, monitor progress and resolve programme risk escalations on behalf of the Project Director.
* Provide up‑to‑date monthly reports to the relevant forum or project board.
* Facilitate regular site safety walks and site construction meetings with contractors.
* Implement improvement initiatives from monitoring of site construction activities and manage the closeout of issues raised through SHEQ audit and inspection activities.
* Coordinate test and inspection activities and ensure site documents comply with legislation and formal document control procedures.
* Capture lessons learned, promote SHEQ best practice across the portfolio and share with Field Operations and NGED.
* Support delivery of trainee programmes, training courses and authorisation processes as required.
* Participate in incident investigations and represent the department on incident investigation panels as required.
Ideal Candidate
* Relevant safety qualification such as the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management, or a chartered membership of IOSH, or progress towards it.
* A degree in safety, environmental or engineering disciplines; an IEMA certificate is preferred.
* Proven leadership experience, with the ability to inspire and lead through others.
* In‑depth knowledge of quality management and NEBOSH inspection requirements, with the application of inspection and test plans to ensure compliant project delivery.
* Experience in the safe management of construction works, including the prevention and investigation of incidents.
* Track record of developing and sustaining safe working cultures and advising operational managers on safety legislation and policies.
* Ability to gain a thorough understanding of current National Grid policies, procedures and specifications related to SHE, materials and construction processes.
* Embodies the company values and proactively demonstrates and develops leadership skills.
Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment. This role is subject to a satisfactory Barring Service (DBS) check, and for some roles a triannual check will be required.
