If you’re an aspiring chef with experience gained in a high-paced kitchen environment and are looking for a rewarding role offering great training, work-life balance, and the chance to be part of an award-winning catering team, join Care UK as a Second Chef and make a real difference.
Being a Second Chef at Care UK
Second Chefs at Care UK excel at working collaboratively. They enjoy sharing information, raising standards through culinary development, innovation, and new ideas. They have access to a large supply chain for all catering requirements and the autonomy to create nutritious, well-balanced menus for everyone. They are self-motivated, flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to take responsibility for resolving issues. They also know how to maintain team discipline and morale within the kitchen. Do you possess similar attributes? Then this role might be perfect for you.
What you’ll be doing
As a Second Chef, your role goes beyond assisting the Head Chef in ensuring food is prepared to standard and deadlines are met. It involves taking control of running the kitchen in their absence, using modern kitchen equipment and fresh local produce to develop full, diet-sensitive meals for residents, ensuring flavor and nutrition. You’ll help develop menus, consult with residents to meet their needs and preferences, and prepare food in line with specific diets. Essentially, it’s about making a meaningful difference in people's lives.
What you’ll need
You should have a Catering Diploma (City & Guilds/BTEC), NVQ 2/3 in practical cookery, and Health and Safety certifications. Food Hygiene Certificates (minimum level 2) are essential. A good understanding of nutritionally balanced menu planning and experience catering for specific dietary needs are important. Experience in a care home setting, stock control, or working with a budget is a plus but not essential. Above all, you should have a natural desire to improve others’ lives and be willing to work in a challenging yet rewarding environment.
