Employment Lawyer – Nottingham, United Kingdom
Permanent position based in our Nottingham office. Hybrid working model: three days in office (Tuesday–Thursday) and two days working from home (Monday and Friday); flexible arrangements where possible.
Responsibilities
* Provide legal advice on all aspects of Capital One's compliance with employment law.
* Identify changes to laws impacting the HR function, partner with stakeholders to understand impacts, and implement new requirements.
* Advise and support through all stages of employee relations issues and investigations.
* Draft, review and advise on employment contracts, policies and procedures.
* Serve as a beacon for employment law knowledge and expertise, preparing and delivering training across the organisation and supporting the UK Leadership Team to navigate employment‑law risk.
* Support the business to manage employee disputes, including employment tribunal claims.
* Develop a strong relationship with HR to understand and provide strategic support across its objectives and priorities.
* Partner with HR risk and compliance stakeholders to identify, navigate and report on HR‑related risks to senior management and the COEP Board.
* Advise on data protection issues impacting HR, including the processing of employee data and handling Data Subject Access Requests.
* Work alongside colleagues across UK Legal to ensure employment‑law advice is provided in the context of a financial services business, understanding FCA rules and the approach across culture, people management and diversity and inclusion agendas.
* Work alongside external counsel where necessary.
* Build a network—internally through relationships with the broader Capital One Enterprise and externally with external counsel and other in‑house teams.
* Partner with organisations such as Women in Finance, Race At Work Charters, Stonewall and upReach.
* Contribute to and participate in internal networks and support groups: REACH, OutFront, Mind Your Mind, Women in Tech, EmpowHER.
Qualifications
* Significant experience as a qualified lawyer.
* A high level of subject‑matter expertise and an ability to work autonomously.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, supporting others to make well‑informed decisions quickly.
* Exceptional judgment, with confidence in decisions and knowing when to raise matters.
* Proven ability to build strong relationships and integrate with HR and senior leadership teams, to understand and support their priorities.
* Proven ability to think strategically, understanding the practical and long‑term implications of legal advice and risk.
* Highly organised and motivated to ensure a high quality of output from a cross‑functional team, with a willingness to adapt and evolve style to meet stakeholder needs and internal policies.
* Willingness to learn and contribute to HR, Legal and COEP business strategies.
