It’s fun to work at The Y!
We are now in pursuit of Outdoor Instructors to join our enthusiastic team at Shakespear Lodge. Available hours will vary week to week depending on camp bookings, which may include weekdays, weekends, public holidays and overnight stays.

The Y Outdoors provides high quality fun, safe and educational outdoor programs for schools and community groups. Shakespear Lodge provides a wide range of activities such as archery, climbing, high ropes, kayaking, bush cooking, mountain biking, hiking, orienteering and others.

What will you be doing?

1. Instructing/ Facilitation: Instruct outdoor educational programmes to groups largely aged 8-14
2. Gear prep and checks: Set up and pack down equipment, along with checking equipment.
3. Holiday Camps: Work school holiday programmes - including activity instruction and supervising and engaging in free time, mealtimes and sleepover support (this will include staying overnight during the programme)
4. Health and Safety: Be responsible for the Health and Safety of clients, self and the team. Reporting and assisting with H&S.
5. Assisting other departments: Assist with the ongoing upkeep of the camp including cleaning, maintenance and catering when needed.
6. Sports Camps: Facilitating a range of sporting competitions including but not limited to Lacrosse, Volleyball, Ki o Rahi, Netball, Badminton, Kiwi Tag and Pickle Ball.

What experience/skills do you need?

To be a successful Outdoor Instructor for The Y you need to be passionate about the outdoors, love working with children and all ages, be able to excite others and share your love of the outdoors. The following attributes are adventagious / desirable but not required:

7. Relevant certificates or qualifications: Outdoor First Aid, High Ropes or Skills Active qualifications, NZOIA, outdoor or sports based certificate/ degree.
8. Technical skills: High ropes, kayaking, hiking, archery, air rifles and knots.
9. Previous experience working with children: can include coaching, work experience and looking after children.
10. Previous experience working at camps / outdoors: can include job placements, work experience, volunteer work.
11. Confidence: in talking to and leading groups
12. Physically active and resilient: able to be on your feet all day, often exposed to the outdoor elements - sun, wind and rain. (Note: if you dislike getting wet or muddy this isn’t for you)
13. Flexibility: Weekly schedules change based on groups requirements, available to work shifts including some weekends and overnights
