Job Overview

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, a world‑renowned cancer centre, are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Developer to lead and support digital automation. In this exciting role you will design, develop, and implement automation solutions to enhance business efficiency and productivity across the trust using UiPath and other tools. You will work closely with process experts and business analysts, translate work into robotic steps, and help staff save time to focus on patient care.

Key Responsibilities

* Build and implement automations using UiPath, Python and other suitable technologies.
* Analyse requirements, design processes and create automation solutions from concept to delivery.
* Support the full RPA lifecycle: planning, coding, testing, deployment and ongoing maintenance.
* Collaborate with business analysts, IT and stakeholders for successful project outcomes.
* Monitor and optimise bot performance for reliability and scalability.
* Stay informed on RPA and UiPath developments, driving innovation and continuous improvement.
* Document technical specifications, processes and best practices.
* Troubleshoot and resolve complex automation issues.
* Ensure compliance with NHS data protection, security and governance standards.
* Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying optimisation opportunities.


About The Christie

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. Based in Manchester, we serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire and receive referrals from all over the UK.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the world’s largest departments, chemotherapy on site and across 14 other hospitals, highly specialist surgery, and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. Internationally, we lead research and maintain world‑first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

Duties and Responsibilities


General Duties

* Undertake development training on automation software and best practice.
* Generate workflow and development specification documents defining the systems, data and requirements of a digital process to be automated.
* Develop automation workflows using principles of the software development lifecycle.
* Work with colleagues to develop acceptance testing and monitor automated workflows.
* Author and submit change control documents for approval via the change authorisation board.
* Monitor and maintain the system and individual automations, addressing errors.
* Assist the design and implementation of processes involving SMEs/workflow owners in the automation lifecycle.
* Support relationships with partner organisations and product manufacturers.
* Provide second‑line support to automation system‑level problems, issues and faults.
* Administer the system daily, ensuring correct and efficient operation.
* Ensure all aspects of system housekeeping, data integrity and security are managed.
* Support the management and review system utilisation and error reports, assessing risks and benefits.
* Assist in managing system upgrades, including assessment, testing, communication, supplier liaison and implementation coordination.
* Deal with complex queries escalated from system managers.
* Conduct system demonstrations and promote the use of RPA at every opportunity.
* Represent the Trust at external system user group meetings.
* Undertake any other work as required by the department.


Data Quality

* Ensure accurate and timely data is recorded within the system.
* Develop and implement a comprehensive set of robust data checks, audits and procedures.
* Resolve system functionality and data collection issues highlighted by data quality processes.


Reporting

* Support the production of timely reports to assist department management and meet external information obligations.
* Follow all data safety policies and procedures to ensure accurate data collection.


Training

* Support lead developers in delivering one‑to‑one and group training sessions to staff.
* Provide detailed instruction and respond to staff questions on practical system use.
* Assess training attendees for required competencies and maintain records before authorising certification and system access.
* Co‑ordinate training programmes for clinical and non‑clinical staff, including new personnel and output from system upgrades.
* Provide training for staff from own or other disciplines as required.


Human Resources

* Provide regular performance reports on progress, status and achievements.
* Support staff development through personal development reviews and related guidance.
* Work unsociable hours or on-call as required to support key programmes or projects.


Financial/Physical Resources

* Input into efficient use of allocated resources and identify cost‑saving opportunities.
* Ensure safe use of ICT hardware and software related to automation.
* Assist in business appraisals, business case production and procurement processes.
* Provide input into supplier proposals and ensure compliance with Trust procurement guidelines.


Project Management

* Advise and participate in the development and implementation of projects, ensuring digital services deliver integrated solutions.
* Ensure project tasks are delivered within agreed time‑scales.
* Support project boards and teams, providing presentations as required.
* Deliver project management documentation and reports to agreed standards.


Policy/Service Development/Governance

* Act as an ambassador for Digital Services, maintaining excellent relationships with users.
* Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and maintain service quality.
* Ensure compliance with NHS data protection, ITIL, information standards and governance.
* Participate in information governance, security and risk management.
* Provide root‑cause analysis for incidents and problems as directed.
* Support users in complying with Caldicott, FOI, and Data Protection Act requirements.
* Maintain documentation on system utilisation.


Business Continuity Management

* Participate in the development, exercise, maintenance and review of business continuity plans.
* Participate in business impact analysis exercises, highlighting critical business processes.
* Be familiar with the Trust Business Continuity Plan and personal responsibilities.
