Summary

We are looking for two Senior Developers to work in the Transport Tribe, delivering services for the Transport Industry. The role is full-time, 37 hours per week, based in Exeter HQ and may be hybrid.


Responsibilities

* Plan and lead development on sets of related user stories.
* Have an understanding of the whole system and take responsibility for teaching this to others.
* Work with other disciplines to understand what needs to be built.
* Coach and mentor more junior colleagues.
* Find ways to improve system robustness, resilience, and stability.

We operate an on-call roster in Technology to provide 24/7/365 support to respond to operational service requirements. This post may be part of an on-call roster, and the postholder would be required to participate in an on-call roster where in operation.


Benefits

* Up to £65,586 annually (£43,081 base pay).
* Outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%.
* Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) – £5,300 per annum as a market supplement from April 2026 until March 2027.
* Annual leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years, option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year.


Essential Criteria, skills and experience

1. Demonstrable expertise in designing, developing, and building complex software solutions using modern development standards with a thorough understanding of secure coding practices and information security principles. (Lead Criteria)
2. Proven ability to lead the prototyping of innovative technical solutions, rapid development and iteration of Proof‑of‑Concept systems, and clearly communicate outcomes to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
3. Demonstrated commitment to understanding user needs and translating them into effective technical solutions, including experience working with user researchers and product owners to gather feedback and iteratively improve products.
4. Demonstrable expertise in identifying process optimisation opportunities, contributing to the implementation of proposed solutions.
5. Experience in teaching, mentoring and coaching more junior team members in existing and new technologies and ways of working.
