Overview
Recycling Centre Site Manager - Saffron Walden. Secondment, Full Time. Location: Saffron Walden. Salary: £29,653 up to £34,885 per annum. Closing Date: 16 September 2025. This is a secondment opportunity for a period of 12 months. We are currently recruiting a Recycling Centre Site Manager to join the Waste Service Team.
This role involves supporting Area Managers to ensure the recycling centres are operated safely and in accordance with all relevant permits, planning conditions and ECC policies and procedures. The role will include working Saturdays and Sundays.
Accountabilities / Responsibilities
* Supervise all Site Operatives to ensure the smooth operation of a Recycling Centre for the public, visitors, staff and contractors; maintain a safe working environment and high standards of housekeeping.
* Line management responsibility for site operatives including personal development, welfare meetings and other aspects of people management.
* Support the Area Manager with resource planning, annual leave requests and return to work interviews following sickness absence.
* Deliver onsite training, toolbox talks and refresher training to ensure compliance and understanding.
* Report defects or damage to plant, containers and property; report any accidents or incidents involving employees, site users, visitors or the public.
* Liaise with transport to maintain capacity and minimise disruption; ensure duty of care and legislative requirements are met.
* Operate in accordance with the Council’s quality health, safety and environmental policies and management systems, in line with permits, planning conditions, discharge consents and risk assessments.
* Identify and contribute to site maintenance and improvements in collaboration with the Area Manager.
* Assist with general site operations including operating plant and equipment; work on a rota including weekend working.
* Deputise for the RCHW Area Manager as required.
* Note: This summary reflects main tasks; additional duties may be required to meet service needs.
Experience & Qualifications
* Minimum GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths or suitable experience.
* CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 4 Medium Risk Operator Competence for Household Waste Recycling Centres.
* IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) Managing Safely – Worksafe training is desirable.
* Experience supervising employees effectively, influencing others and developing a strong on-site team culture.
* Patient manner and good communication skills, with experience dealing with members of the public.
* Previous experience in the waste management industry, with operational experience of managing RCHW services.
* Full UK driving licence.

Please note this role requires mobility throughout an operational area. A driving licence and access to a vehicle, or the ability to meet mobility requirements through other means, is required.
