This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Central Western Massachusetts. The incumbent is responsible for providing meals and nutritional care to Veteran patients. The primary purpose of the Cook, WG-06, is to independently prepare nutritious, high-quality meals for service to Veterans, following steps that require attention to work operations, sanitation, and safety.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Preparing and cooking a variety of regular and therapeutic diet foods and meals, including meats, poultry, fish, shellfish, vegetables, soups, gravies, sauces, desserts, etc.
* Planning cooking processes to produce complete meals on time and at proper temperatures, coordinating multiple items with different cooking times.
* Storing leftovers properly and maintaining sanitation and safety standards in food handling and equipment operation.
* Cleaning kitchen equipment and work areas regularly, including deep cleaning tasks.
* Receiving, rotating, and storing food items according to policies, ensuring proper food safety practices.
* Assisting in ordering food supplies as needed.
Work Schedule:
40 hours per week, multiple shifts based on service needs.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
* Standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 40 lbs.
* Operating kitchen equipment and handling sharp knives safely.
* Working in hot, cold, noisy environments, and exposure to steam, odors, and potential hazards.
Requirements:

* Background and suitability investigation
* Possibility of drug testing and probationary period
* Veterans' Preference does not apply to internal candidates
Preferred Qualifications:
Valid ServSafe Food Manager Certification.
Minimum Qualifications:
Evidence of training or experience demonstrating ability to perform duties, rated according to OPM standards. No specific educational requirements.
