Job summary

This is an exciting time to join our Site Operations team. In June of this year, we implemented and embedded a new electronic bed management system across our trust, and continue to improve our newly developed Command Centre. We are on a continuous journey of improvement using data and real-time situational awareness to enhance how we deliver care to our patients. We are looking for a strong leader who is passionate about safety, patient care and improvement, with an emphasis of coaching and nurturing our staff.

The Senior Nurse's key responsibility is to monitor and develop patient pathways of care throughout the trust to improve patient flow, safety and quality of care. This will be achieved through managing the site based teams of Senior Clinical Managers, Critical Care Outreach Nurse Practitioners and bed managers with delegated responsibility from the Director of Site Operations.

Plays a leading role in the oversight of the trust's capacity management either through leading clinical shifts within the command centre or supporting the command centre with escalations and decision making. The command centre is currently based on the QEH site with the expectation it will operate from both sites.

Job responsibilities

Ensure standards of patient care and the patient experience are of the highest quality inspiring patient and public confidence. Specifically, this will include liaising within and across directorates to ensure the smooth flow of patients through the hospital and ensure all standards for the Clinical Site Managers, Critical Care Outreach Nurse Practitioners and bed managers are maintained.

The post holder will be an expert nurse practitioner with knowledge of managing the critically deteriorating patients. Also, a role model with competent/proficient leadership skills. He/she will be proficient and effective in managing rapidly changing situations with ease, has a sense of salience and intuitive judgement utilising specialist skills both clinically and managerially.

The post holder will ensure that all patients are treated with compassion, dignity and respect placing value on the diversity of the local community and beyond.

The post holder will lead and manage the Clinical Site Managers, and the Critical Care Outreach Nurse Practitioners. He/she will provide professional and managerial support to the Director of Site Operations.

The post holder will liaise closely with all directorates as well as all wards/departments throughout the Trust as necessary. He/she will liaise with the Divisional Heads of Nursing/Senior Matrons & Matrons, working autonomously on a day-to-day basis.


Person specification


Knowledge & skills (essential)

* A commitment to improving patient services through an ability to sustain a clear performance focus (complex HR issues) on achieving demanding goals;
* Can interpret complex management data/information


Qualifications and training (essential)

* First level registered Nurse.
* Formal education to first degree level or equivalent ability Post registration qualification in relevant clinical subject (Critical Care/HDU).
* Evidence of equivalent knowledge and experience to Masters level is acceptable.


Experience (essential)

* Minimum 2/3 years operational management experience in an acute NHS Trust services relevant to the post applied for, at band 8a (or equivalent) or above.
* Minimum 2 years staff & budget management, at band 7 (or equivalent) or above. Managing specialist services
* Management of change
* Experience in critical care
* Demonstrable previous success in leading and delivering change and performance with and through clinical teams, by engaging them in the strategic direction and delivery plans, establishing clear work priorities with them, delegating effectively, ensuring a capability to deliver, monitoring performance and giving feedback;
* Proven ability to analyse complex problems and to develop and successfully implement practical and workable solutions to address them;
* Ability to collaborate constructively with internal and external partners to create the conditions for successful partnership working;
* Experience in handling and investigating complaints at a Senior level
* Ability to work across professional boundaries and lead MDT projects
