Job Title: Learning Mentor
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Contract: Part time, Full Time, Term Time Only
Start Date: September 2026 or sooner
Salary: £92 – £115 per day

GSL Education are currently recruiting for a dedicated and compassionate Learning Mentor to undertake short-term cover and long-term placements within secondary schools in York and the surrounding areas.

This is an excellent opportunity to work closely with students who require additional academic, behavioural, or emotional support, helping them to engage positively with education and develop the skills and resilience needed to succeed both in and out of the classroom.

About the Role:

As a Learning Mentor, you will provide targeted support to individual students and small groups, helping them to overcome challenges that may affect their learning and wellbeing. Working collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and families, you will play a key role in promoting positive behaviour, attendance, engagement, and personal development.

Core Responsibilities of the Learning Mentor:

• Provide one-to-one and small-group support to students requiring additional guidance
• Support learners in overcoming barriers to learning and personal development
• Promote positive behaviour, attendance, and engagement with education
• Build strong, supportive relationships with students, staff, and parents/carers
• Monitor student progress and maintain accurate records of interventions and outcomes
• Work closely with teaching and pastoral teams to implement effective support strategies
• Support students’ emotional wellbeing, resilience, and self-confidence
• Contribute to safeguarding and welfare procedures in line with school policies
• Encourage students to develop independence, responsibility, and positive learning habits

As the Ideal Learning Mentor, You Should Have:

• Previous experience working with children or young people in an educational, pastoral, mentoring, or youth support setting
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• A patient, empathetic, and supportive approach to working with learners
• Ability to build positive relationships and act as a positive role model
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
• Understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a wider support team
• A genuine passion for helping young people succeed

To Work with GSL Education, You Must:

• Have the right to work in the UK
• Provide an up-to-date CV with relevant reference information covering the last 2 years
• Have recent experience working with children or young people
• Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to apply for one
