Job Description

We are looking for a personable, organised individual for this exciting hands-on role at our award-winning museum.

In this role, no day is the same. You will be working with our team of volunteers to help deliver a first-class welcome experience. You'll be experienced with figures and handling cash, and confident using Microsoft office and other IT packages. You'll work with colleagues to ensure our small gift shop is fully stocked and our café staff are supported at busy times if necessary. Presentable and experienced in achieving targets you will help promote and deliver our events and activities.

You will enjoy working with the public and a general interest in local history and the local environment would be an advantage.

Background

Shire Hall Museum is an award-winning social justice museum in the heart of Dorset. A Grade I listed building, during its time as Dorset's courthouse Shire Hall saw everything from the 1834 trial of the Tolpuddle Martyrs to the 1856 trial which inspired Hardy to write Tess of the D'Urbervilles, as well as child perpetrators and American GIs tried during the Second World War. Since opening as a museum in 2018, Shire Hall's mission is to engage visitors with the history of justice and injustice, which inspires people to make a difference to society, politics, and justice for all.

Responsibilities

You will be expected to work independently as well as across different teams in order to contribute to and deliver the priorities of Shire Hall Museum - using your knowledge, skills, talent and potential to the best of your ability. You will always focus on delivering excellent customer service, always ensure value for money while being professional, courteous and demonstrating the behaviours and attributes expected of all Shire Hall Museum employees. You will also adhere to all corporate standards, and use systems as directed to ensure consistency of service, brand and operational standards. You will be expected to work across departments effectively as well as identify and implement learning and development needs when working with individuals, partners and volunteers.

This is a new role for Shire Hall Museum so you will have an opportunity to help inform the direction the role will take in the future.
