HMGCC is at the forefront of engineering innovation, delivering high‑impact, technology‑driven solutions for UK national security. We push the boundaries of what’s possible, and we’re looking for an inspirational leader to shape and elevate our electronics profession.

You will lead the electronics profession, solving the most difficult problems across a wide range of areas to protect national security. You will oversee development of electronics capability, manage technical risk, mentor engineering talent, and align our electronics portfolio with business goals. You will influence long‑term technical direction, standards, tools and ways of working.

To apply for this role, you will already have:

* Substantial expertise in electronic engineering, demonstrated through a Chartership or equivalent professional experience.
* Significant experience in electronics/hardware design, with an excellent track record of leading complex projects.
* Proven experience in technical leadership, mentoring, and capability building.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present a clear vision to stakeholders at all levels to drive transformational change.

It would be beneficial if you also have the following (although these are not essential):

* Deep understanding of a wide variety of disciplines, e.g. analogue, digital, mixed‑signal, power electronics, PCB design, RF, FPGA and embedded systems.
* Proficient in ECAD tools in an enterprise environment.
* Experience defining and implementing technical standards and best practices.
* Prior experience of managing and working collaboratively with external suppliers and partners.

Your personal skills

You will be someone who:

* Inspires and motivates teams to do their best in their work.
* Displays behaviours that promote a collaborative working environment which supports equality, diversity and inclusion.
* Can set and maintain a clear direction with highly focused priorities to deliver pragmatic outcomes.
* Is adept at driving a performance culture across the organisation, empowering teams to deliver, whilst holding them accountable for outcomes.
* Is skilled in problem‑solving and decision‑making, especially around trade‑offs and risk.

Responsibilities

Using your diverse range of skills and reporting to the Chief Engineer, you will:

* Lead and grow the electronics profession: define vision, strategy, and roadmaps for electronics engineering within the organisation.
* Provide deep technical leadership on critical electronics and multi‑discipline programmes.
* Mentor, coach, and develop a team of electronics engineers, enabling career progression, skills growth and professional excellence.
* Collaborate cross‑functionally: work with engineering leads and other heads of professions to identify emerging tools, techniques and technologies, evaluate their relevance, and guide their adoption into our products.
* Manage technical risk: lead design reviews, identify critical risks, and define mitigation strategies.
* Represent the electronics profession with stakeholders, providing expert insight.
