Overview
Flexible working: Full‑time and part‑time hours are available. This is an office‑based role and you will be able to benefit from flexitime and compressed hours, subject to business need. Due to the sensitive nature of the role, remote, hybrid or home working is not possible. HR Services is a critical function supporting colleagues across MI5, MI6 and GCHQ, both in the UK and abroad. In everything we do, we aim to deliver best practice and ensure compliance every time, enabling colleagues to work efficiently and safely wherever they are based.
Responsibilities
* Handle a wide range of HR queries and provide clear, accurate guidance on policy.
* Prioritise workflow and resolve queries efficiently while contributing to improvements in operations.
* Support teams across the agencies, including Payroll and Pension teams, and collaborate cross‑organisation.
* Advising managers on sensitive staff matters and ensuring essential changes are processed quickly and correctly.
* Supervise one or two administrative team members (if selected for line management).
* Travel to other MI5 sites as required.
Development and Training
When you join HR Services, you begin with a thorough induction covering team, processes and systems. You will receive continuous support from a mentor and access to internal and external training, including study time for candidates working towards CIPD where available. For the first four years, you’ll remain in HR Services to build foundations before exploring roles across the wider organisation.
Application Process
1. Complete an online application form with pre‑screening questions.
2. Take an online Situational Judgement Test (SJT) to assess responses to short scenarios.
3. Undergo an application sift reviewing motivation, skills and suitability, plus competency questions.
4. Participate in an interview that examines typical situational responses.
5. Successful candidates receive a conditional offer of employment.
Processing may take around 6 to 9 months, including vetting. We advise continuing current employment until a final job offer has been received.
Eligibility and Security
You must be a British citizen or hold dual British nationality. This role requires the highest level of security clearance, known as Developed Vetting (DV). All candidates must also comply with the strict drugs policy; recreational drug use is prohibited. The role is based in London and will require living within a commutable distance. Travel costs for in‑person interviews or assessments may be reimbursed at discretion.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Minimum of one year's experience in HR or an HR setting.
* CIPD Associate Level (or equivalent).
* Pass the Organisational Situational Judgement Test (OSJT) with the minimum pass mark.
* Pass the motivation and competency questions at sift.
* Strong written communication skills for explaining processes clearly in a ticketing system.
* Detail‑orientated with ability to work with basic data.
* Good emotional intelligence and empathy to support colleagues under pressure.
* Teamwork, curiosity, problem‑solving and a willingness to learn.
