Role Overview
We are seeking a strategic and hands-on Enterprise Data Architect to lead the development of our data architecture strategy within the Data Management team, part of the Chief Data Office. This role is pivotal in transforming how we manage, govern, and leverage data across the organization.
You will help shape our enterprise data architecture, ensuring our data is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR), aligning with our transformation and AI ambitions. You will lead a small team responsible for developing and delivering our corporate data approaches to achieve data excellence.
Key Responsibilities
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand strategic data requirements and develop technical delivery roadmaps, including 'as is', 'to be', and transitional states.
* Design, develop, and establish data architectural principles, policies, standards, and best practices.
* Understand data modelling approaches to integrate multiple data sources, articulate data models, and define standards for consistency and accuracy.
* Provide specialist input to national projects on data basics, trustworthy data, storage, and FAIR principles.
* Lead, coach, and develop team members, sharing technical knowledge.
* Conduct horizon scanning to identify emerging industry trends and assess their impact and opportunities for the organization.
Team Background
The Data Management team is a center of excellence within the Data and Information department, part of the Strategy, Transformation and Assurance directorate. We focus on data architecture, standards, integration, and quality to enable smarter decisions and better outcomes through trusted data.
Essential Skills and Experience
* Proven experience in enterprise-scale data architecture and strategy development.
* Strong knowledge of data modelling, metadata management, and data governance.
* Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including at senior levels.
* Ability to lead and influence in a matrixed environment.
* Experience translating strategic data approaches into practical delivery.
* Experience collaborating with business and technology stakeholders.
Desirable Qualifications
* Certifications such as TOGAF, Azure Solutions Architect, or CDMP.
* Experience in the public sector or regulated industries.
* Knowledge of FAIR data principles, data mesh, or data ecosystems.
* Familiarity with UK data regulations like GDPR.
Additional Information
This role requires UK Security Check (SC) clearance. Eligibility criteria include:
* Living in the UK for the past five years.
* Providing verifiable employment history.
We cannot sponsor Skilled Worker visas. Bristol is preferred for hub-based work, with flexible working options and occasional travel. Remote collaboration is standard. Benefits include a 19% pension contribution and incident response duties.
