We are looking for people across all our rich diversity to help keep the City of Edmonton clean as a Communal Collection Labourer.
As the Communal Collection Labourer, you'll have a variety of tasks in your workday. On most days, you will be teamed up with a collection Operator helping to navigate to collection locations and collect a variety of waste streams from communal bins/carts by assisting with vehicle backing, swamping, and recording of work done.
What will you do?
Assist drivers with backing of collection vehicles, per the City of Edmonton's backing with a guide procedures
Manage and maintain a variety of keys/fobs and access cards, ensuring they are returned at the end of the shift
Load and clear excess materials in and around waste/recycling bins/carts
Ensuring security at all relevant sites that are serviced
Move and/or position empty waste/recycling bins/carts back to their original or designated locations at Communal sites
Perform manual labourer duties (including heavy lifting/pushing) associated with manoeuvring full waste/recycling/food scraps containers to staging locations for collection
Adhere to all policies and procedures during the collection process, including safety and environmental regulations and procedures
Be aware of collection processes and policies to aid in any public inquiries you may encounter in the field, dealing with concerns from the public of a minor nature
Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle, including cleaning hoppers/traps daily
Operate the rearload collection hydraulic tipper controls
Perform other and related duties as directed by leadership
Qualifications:
Completion of Grade Twelve (12)
Minimum of six (6) months of experience working in or around front-load and rear-load collection vehicles, or in related areas such as labour or litter pickup
Ability to operate electronic devices such as Tablets and Cell phones
Assets:
Valid Alberta Class 3 licence (or provincial equivalent)
Current Standard First Aid certification
Experience in the Waste Collection industry
Ability to work in a team environment.
Skills Required for Success:
Ability to perform heavy, strenuous and agility-intensive labour for extended periods of time and under extreme weather conditions
Knowledge and application of correct weight lifting and handling techniques in order to minimise strain and lifting injury
Knowledge of appropriate material handling practices to avoid skin and eye contamination, cuts, slipping, and associated mishaps
Ability to deal with the public during pickup of refuse and to resolve complaints of a minor nature
Ability to work alone with little or no supervision, as well as the ability to work with a small team

Conditions of Employment:
Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement for this position
Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement for this position
Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position; there may be a cost associated with this requirement
Passing a physical strength evaluation (Functional Ability Recruitment Evaluation test F.A.R.E.) and a pre-employment City medical examination is a requirement of this position
Work Environment:
Being a passenger in the collection vehicle for sustained periods of time
Physically strenuous labour is required when manoeuvring waste/recycling/food scraps containers to Collection areas and returning them to their original locations
Working outdoors in all weather conditions.
