Assistant Solicitor - NI Housing Executive - Belfast Join the Northern Ireland Housing Executive as an Assistant Solicitor.
The Assistant Solicitor will be expected to work independently, under the supervision of the Senior Solicitors within Legal Services to ensure the provision of a high-quality legal services to all levels of the organisation.
About the role:
1. Hourly Rate: £19.32 per hour
2. Location: Belfast
3. Hours: 37 hrs per week, Monday to Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm
4. Duration: Temporary, ongoing
5. Holidays: 35 days pro rata

What you'll be doing in this role:
7. The Assistant Solicitor will undertake and assist in the provision of professional and timely legal advice and assistance and representation in relation to a range of matters across the main functions of the team as follows, for which training will be provided: social housing and the conduct of High Court civil litigation, including judicial review and tribunal work conduct of contentious work, as directed, which may include homelessness legislation, employment, FOI/Data Protection, civil litigation To undertake and assist in all aspects of the provision of legal advice and assistance to the Housing Executive in the delivery of its statutory functions and business objectives. To assist in the provision of legal advice and assistance in respect of the development and operation of Housing Executive policy matters. To undertake and assist in the quality assurance of settlement of public liability claims. To undertake research into legal issues and provide opinion papers as directed. To liaise with, attend and advise clients and third parties and accept new instructions as directed. To undertake contentious work as directed in connection with any of the above matters to include liaising with third parties in connection with client matters: expert witnesses, courts and Counsel. To provide, or arrange for the provision of, legal advice and assistance in respect of any other matters as required by the Legal Services team to meet the needs of the Housing Executive. To undertake and to be responsible for the management of own caseload while being subject to the direction and supervision of the Senior Solicitors as nominated by the Head of Legal Services. To assist the Senior Solicitors in the provision of legal advice and support to all levels of senior management. To participate and support in the building and maintaining an effective and efficient Legal Services team and ensuring a professional and high-quality service in support of the Housing Executive’s objectives and outcomes. To support and participate in the delivery of the annual Business Plan for Legal Services and reports to Senior Management. To assist with the preparation of briefing materials for Committee and Board approval as required and attending these meetings as appropriate. To operate and maintain the relevant information case management systems and controls. To work collaboratively with members of the Legal Services team in order to deliver business objectives. To provide regular reports on all legal work to the supervising Senior Solicitor to enable compliance with reporting controls to the Director of Corporate Services, the Chief Executive and the senior management team, as may be considered necessary or appropriate. To maintain and continuously develop professional knowledge and competence across a broad range of areas of law to enable and ensure the provision of quality legal advice and assistance to NIHE.

Possess a degree or equivalent (Level 6*) qualification.

Be a solicitor of the Court of Judicature of Northern Ireland qualified to practice in Northern Ireland. Can demonstrate at least 24 months relevant post-qualification experience in the provision, or assisting in the provision, of legal advice and assistance in relation to the conduct of, or assisting in the conduct of, claims litigation matters in the High Court or County Court. Can demonstrate (to be assessed at assessment / interview): Excellent analytical thinking and decision making skills Strong organisational skills in order to manage a busy caseload Ability to work well under pressure of multiple deadlines Excellent interpersonal communication and influencing skills Willingness and ability to work collegiately Possess a current driving licence or have access to a form of transport that enables them to meet the requirements of the post in full. Hold one of the following qualifications: The final examinations of AAT or IATI The foundation papers of a CCAB body (or equivalent) A relevant Bachelor’s degree (where accounting is the major component) or equivalent qualification

Must demonstrate a minimum of 3 years’ experience in an accounting environment in at least 3 of the following areas: Experience in budget setting, forecasting, monitoring and reporting of expenditure. Experience in the preparation of statutory accounts. Experience in the identification and implementation of business process improvements within a finance environment to drive improved performance. Experience in managing a team (Manager/Supervisor role) within a busy finance environment in order to ensure deadlines are achieved and procedures followed, whilst ensuring suitable arrangements for staff training, motivation, discipline and performance assessment. Experience in the use of an integrated financial management system, linked reporting tools and advanced spreadsheets skills. Experience in writing reports using SAP Business Objects/Crystal report writing tool. Experience in finance systems implementation projects, demonstrating experience in a key role in any of the following: project management, system testing, production of control procedure documentation, implementation support and training.
