Are sending out hundreds of applications and you match the person specification, but employers don't seem to be in a hurry to respond?

First of all - don't get yourself down about it. You're not the only one and the job market is tough in the current economic climate. Even if you're not getting replies, or perhaps replies you don't like, continue to develop your network of contacts and perfect the art of self-presentation!
Check to see if the employer didn't ask you for an interview for one of the following five reasons:

1. CV doesn't include Job Title
98% of the time, the reason is found in your CV. Try to look at it as a critical HR-manager. Does the content of your CV clearly show the position you're applying for? The sign of a good CV is this; you should be able to guess the job title of the offer from reading the CV. If your CV fails this test, re-work your CV and tailor it properly to the job you want.

2. Your Cover Letter isn't convincing
If you send applications "en masse", then it's probably true that their content is too general and therefore doesn't meet the requirements of each individual job. A recruiter can spot a generic application and won't be interested. They want to see your genuine interest in the job they're offering and a passion for the industry. Tailor each Cover Letter for each application you make.

3 . Your skills don't meet the requirements
If you've spend time tweaking your CV for the job and written a convincing Cover Letter and you still don't get invited to Interview, it may be that your education level doesn't meet that which the recruiter is looking for, or perhaps isn't as high as the competition for the same level job. If you feel your education is lacking on your CV, replace it with examples of professional experience and the skills you've learnt on the job. If you still can't seem to get to the interview stage or land a job, think about furthering your education with part-time courses. This will not only boost the education section of your CV but it shows dedication and determination to get the job you're applying for.

4. Someone got there first
You've put in your application that you spend time and effort tailoring for that job, but someone got in there before you. Just like you, their qualifications match those specified in the advert and they've got a similar level of experience to you. If the first CV the employers get matches the post perfectly, they quite often won't bother dragging out the applications. Make sure you apply well before the deadline to be among those first few and with a better chance of getting to the Interview stages.

5. They intended to answer you, but they didn't have time.
During the recruitment process, employers receive so many letters and resumes that sometimes they just don't have time to answer everybody. Some, on the other hand, don't follow up with the answers until they've received a certain number of applications – so as to compare applicants against each other. Some recruiting campaigns can last up to three weeks. If you haven't heard back from them, wait it out a little while. If after a week or two there's still no answer, don't be afraid to send an e-mail enquiring about your application status and if it was correctly received.

How can you know the exact reason?
If you are really interested in the position, you can take the initiative to ask the employer for feedback on your application. If you decide to write, do not send more than two letters or e-mails - your perseverance can come across as desperation which won't do you any favours. A phone call , in most cases, will help solve the problem - but prepare in advance for a mini-interview over the phone.
