You are looking for your first job and asking yourself how to negotiate your salary during the job interview? When is the right time to ask questions about the salary? What mistakes should you avoid making? Find out all the answers to your questions in this article.

Address the issue of the salary at the end of the interview

You have questions about the salary? Wait until the end of the interview before asking the recruiter information about the salary. Indeed, before asking how much you will be paid, you need to make sure the recruiter is truly interested in your profile. To insure it is the case during the interview, remember always to present well, talk about your previous experiences and put forward your skills.

How much should I ask for?

It’s not easy to know how which salary to claim for… especially for a first job! The best advice we can give you is make sure you do as much research as possible on the salaries offered in business sector for which you are willing to work in. It is important that you take into account your level of qualifications and years of experience when doing this research.
However, if you are applying for your first job, avoid referring to the graduate wage study that was given by your school at the end of your studies. This justification is very often put forward by candidates and can show a bad impression of you.

Mistakes you should avoid making

The first mistake young graduates tend to make is to underestimate the salary they ask for. This mistake often occurs with candidates who have a low level of confidence. Keep in mind that the salary that will be given to you is in line with the value you bring to the company which is in line with your skills and previous experience.

Another mistake that you could make is to ask for a salary which is too high. To make up for this mistake, don’t hesitate to put forward your previous experience and focus on what you have accomplished in previous jobs to sell yourself.

Another issue can be that you don’t know what salary to expect. In this case, it is well seen to ask the recruiter in which scale the salary fits instead of answering that you don’t know what salary to ask for.
